Potpourri of Stuff!
Hey there fellas. Hope all are doing good! In this post, I’d like to introduce you to Mars One (MO), an organization that plans to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. It is a not-for-profit organization and a part of the Interplanetary Media Group. Here is the Mars-One Official Website. Check out the website, it has all that you would be thinking right now – Are you kidding me , Is it even possible, Is it Ethical, What are the challenges to be faced and all FAQs.
The dream of this organization is HUGE! We need people who dream like this – Dream Big and do everything in their power to achieve it. Mars One is one such boon to us, they are going to help us take the next giant leap for mankind. I was browsing Google to learn about the ISRO selection process in India. I had some luck and got some links to some exams and stuff. I got carried away and I wanted to know the astronaut selection process in India (or if there is such a process available here). I was searching for a long time and I came across this website that said it plans to put Man on Mars. I was curious because I had read about the Mars Society headed by Dr. Zubrin that tirelessly works to put man on Mars but this was a new one. Since I am a space freak, I immediately subscribed to the Mars One newsletter. It also had a header that told me that they were gonna open registration soon and anyone over 18 years of age can apply. I was like WOW, this is awesome!
I regularly checked our their updates and one fine day, there was this mail sitting in my Gmail “Mars One” folder – Mars One opens the door to online Astronaut Selection Applications. I was so excited and I wanted to register immediately. I used a Debit card but the payment was being denied. There was money in the account (I had to pay like $7 or something) and I kept trying it for like 10-15 times, the payment was denied every time. I was worried but then I sought the help of a relative to get a credit card and then registered successfully. I was so happy.
After I paid, I was allowed to edit my profile. It had so many questions and also I had to do a a short video introducing myself and answering a few questions. I first completed the entire profile and then at last submitted the video. My profile was complete and was accepted! My profile became active.
People who have known me well will know that I have a keen interest in space science. I never made this news public, until now. I only told very few friends about this and they thought I was crazy 😀 (I mean.. who won’t?). Here is the link to my public profile . If you have some time to spare, kindly rate my application.
A few days ago, there was a MMM (Million Martians Meet) in USA and also in Germany. Now, it is being planned in India too (mostly around November/December 2013 and the venue is still being decided – can be Bangalore or NCR). I am proud that India, even with very less number of applicants is hosting a MMM here. You do not have to be an applicant to attend this MMM, anyone who finds the idea of sending people to Mars interesting can attend and share their views and ideas. We also have a very active Mars One Facebook group. You can join in and see what people are talking about and join any discussion if you are interested.
The most important part is, this is a one way mission. You pack your bags and go to Mars to never return back. You live your entire life there performing experiments and exploring the planet – testing the soil for signs of life and stuff like that. Before humans are actually sent to Mars, there will be numerous missions in which robots and all materials required for man are sent there. Before humans land on Mars, there will be a completely safe habitat to live in, food for a limited time (further cultivation there will be through hydroponics) and electronic gadgets and other minimal fertile creature comforts. Well, if you enjoy waking up at 7 and listening to the birds singing in your backyard, this mission is not for you. Below is a picture that describes this mission. More details are available on the official website. Check it out.
So, to all space enthusiasts out there, I highly recommend you join the FB group and also sign up for the MO news letter. If you have any questions, kindly leave a comment. Good luck all. 🙂 .
